“What time should the turkey go in?” is the one Thanksgiving question that actually has a precise answer — it just depends on a few numbers: how big the bird is, how many ovens you have, whether your sides are made ahead, and what time you want to eat. This generator does that backward math instantly, using the Reverse Timeline System explained on this site.

How the schedule is calculated

The Math Behind It

  • Turkey cook time — about 13 minutes per pound at 325°F, unstuffed
  • Rest time — 30 minutes after the turkey comes out, before carving
  • Sides & bread — timed around when the oven actually frees up, or scheduled independently if you have a second oven
  • Made-ahead dishes — get a short final reheat instead of a full cook window
  • Buffer time — a small cushion built in near the end to absorb delays
Always double-check with a meat thermometer. The 13-minutes-per-pound estimate is a planning starting point, not a substitute for checking that the thickest part of the thigh reads 165°F before serving.
Buffer time, explained. The schedule below leaves a small gap between the last oven task and carving — not because it's needed every year, but because something always runs a few minutes long. That cushion is what keeps a 5-minute delay from cascading into a late dinner.
This generator is turkey-first for now. Ham, chicken, and lasagna timelines are on the list for a future version — for the math behind those mains today, see [the Main Dish Decision System](/blog/non-traditional-thanksgiving-menu/).

Why a calculated schedule beats a memorized one

Every Thanksgiving bird is a slightly different weight, every kitchen has a different number of ovens, and every household eats at a different time — a generic “turkey takes about 4 hours” rule doesn’t account for any of that. This generator does the same subtraction the Reverse Timeline System describes by hand, just instantly, and specific to your own turkey, your own oven setup, and your own serving time.

Once the schedule is set, the Thanksgiving Menu & Grocery Planner is where the dishes on that schedule get shopped for, and the Thanksgiving Hosting Countdown covers everything that has to happen before this schedule even starts. After dinner, the One Bird, One Week System turns everything on this schedule into a week of leftover meals.
