🍽️ The Weekly Meal Planning Sheet

One page. A full week of dinners, a matching grocery list, no blank-page stress.

Most weekly planners fail for the same reason: they hand you seven empty boxes and expect you to fill each one with a fresh idea. By Wednesday, the boxes are still empty and dinner is a last-minute scramble. The fix isn't more willpower β€” it's not needing seven ideas in the first place.

The 7-Slot Weekly Dinner System

The Method

Instead of planning seven unique meals, assign each day a slot type β€” a category of dinner, not a specific recipe. Once you know the slot, picking the actual meal takes seconds, because the slot already tells you what ingredients and effort level you're working with.

SlotWhat It MeansEffort
1. Fridge Clean-OutUse whatever's about to expire β€” a stir-fry, a frittata, a soup15-20 min
2. Freezer MealSomething already made β€” pull it, thaw it, reheat it5 min
3. Pantry MealShelf-stable only β€” pasta, beans, canned goods, no store run needed20 min
4. New RecipeThe one night you actually try something new30-45 min
5. Repeat FavoriteThe meal your household always says yes to β€” zero decisions required25 min
6. 15-Minute NightEggs, quesadillas, grilled cheese β€” for the day that got away from you15 min
7. Flex NightLeftovers, takeout, or eating out β€” planned on purpose, not out of defeat0 min
Why slots beat a blank calendar. A blank Tuesday asks "what should I make?" β€” an open-ended question with infinite answers, which is exactly what causes decision fatigue. A Tuesday labeled "Pantry Meal" asks a much smaller question: "what pantry meal?" That's the entire point of a system β€” it doesn't remove the decision, it shrinks it.
Assign the hard days first. Before you fill in anything else, mark your busiest night as Flex or Freezer and your slowest night as New Recipe. Everything else fills in around those two anchors, not the other way around.

Filling it in takes about 10 minutes

Sunday (or whenever your week resets), work through the sheet in this order:

  • Check the fridge and freezer first β€” that decides your Fridge Clean-Out and Freezer Meal days
  • Check your calendar for the busiest night β€” assign it Flex or 15-Minute, not New Recipe
  • Pick one Repeat Favorite β€” the meal that needs zero debate
  • Fill the remaining slots with Pantry Meal and New Recipe
  • Build the grocery list from whatever those meals actually need β€” not from a generic list

  • List organized by store section, not by meal

Reuse it every week

This isn't a one-time worksheet β€” it's meant to get filled in, used, and printed again next week. Once you've done it two or three times, the slot categories stop feeling like a system and start feeling like how your household just plans dinner. That's the goal: not a perfect plan, a repeatable one.

Want the same slot-based thinking applied to a specific occasion instead of a regular week? The Halloween Planning Kit runs the same idea β€” freezer meal, pantry meal, leftovers, fuel-up dinner β€” across one specific stretch of the calendar instead of every week.
